MOUNT KANG GURU EXPEDITION

MOUNT KANG GURU EXPEDITION

(29 NIGHTS/ 30 DAYS )

overview

Mount Kang guru is mostly known for causing catastrophes like avalanches in the Nepalese Himalayas. On October 20, 2005, a powder-snow avalanche, resulted from several hours of heavy snowfall, plowed into a French expedition’s base camp, sweep away all seven members of the French team as well as 11 Nepalese staff down a steep avalanche gorge when they were inside the tent in afternoon after tea time. Unfortunately none of them were alive. Several porters who were outside their tents at the time however survived. They went the nearest village where they came across a French-Israeli expedition preparing to climb Ratna Chuli nearby mountain. The team immediately informed the French embassy in Kathmandu and break off their climb due to poor snow conditions. In initial attempts, only one body was recovered and later in mid-November, avalanche search specialists from France found only two more bodies (a French climber and a Nepalese porter) before calling off the search until the following year.

The rescue team, including five surviving members of the French expedition, returned to the accident site and recovered the remaining bodies in July 2006. Lush green meadows had replaced all snowy ground. Using dental records, French forensic experts identified the French climbers. The bodies of the Nepalese were returned to their families with compensation by French Embassy while the dead bodies of French climbers were flown back to France. Nine of the killed Nepalese porters were from the village of Larpak in the Gorkha District. The death toll of this accident left behind the previous record number of climbers killed by an avalanche in Nepal. Again, an avalanche on Manaslu killed ten Nepalese, four Korean and one Japanese cameraman when it slammed into their tents at 3:15 am on April 1972.
