MOUNT KANCHANJUNGA EXPEDITION

MOUNT KANCHANJUNGA EXPEDITION

( 54 NIGHTS/ 55 DAYS )

overview

Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m / 28,169ft.) the 3rd highest peak in the world, lies at the border between Nepal and Sikkim, India. The beautiful white mountain is delimited by the Tamur River in the west, the Lhonak River and the Jongsang Pass in the north and the Teesta River in the east. Until 1852, before the Mt. Everest was discovered, the Kanchanjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in world. The dominating height was first concurred by Joe Brown and George Band in 1955, as part of a British Mt. Kanchenjunga expedition (8,585m).

The name is derived from the two Tibetan words, ‘Kanchen’ and ‘Dzonga’, meaning ‘The Five Treasures of the Snow’. The immaculate beauty of the gigantic rise is breathtaking, especially during the spring season. There is a tradition followed by climbers who approach the summit of this mountain. They stop a few feet before reaching the actual summit, as the summit of the peak is considered to be sacred by the locals, and it should not be stepped upon by anyone. The Kanchenjunga expedition can be difficult. The trek would begin and end at Suketar, and on the way to the base camp there would opportunities to acclimatize and rest at teahouses.
